Congratulations! Yesterday, Prof. Gerd Kempermann, site speaker at the DZNE Dresden, was ceremoniously inducted as new member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. This award honours his services to the neurosciences. Gerd Kempermann's research focuses on adult neurogenesis, i.e., the generation of new neurons in the adult brain and their regulation by genes as well as physical and cognitive activity.

The Leopoldina appointed Prof. Kempermann to the so-called Class III (Medicine) last year. Traditionally, new members of the Leopoldina are invited to the symposium of their specialist class and an official induction ceremony at the Leopoldina in Halle (Saale) the year after their election to receive their membership certificates. The Academy's experts provide independent and voluntary science-based policy advice on socially relevant issues.

In Halle, Prof. Kempermann now received his membership certificate. The laudation for all new members was held by the President of the Leopoldina, Prof. (ETHZ) Gerald Haug.

About the Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina: Founded in 1652, the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina, with its approximately 1,600 members from almost all scientific disciplines, is a classic scholarly society. It was named the German National Academy of Sciences in 2008. In this function, it has two special tasks: to represent German science abroad and to advise politicians and the public. Classes and sections form the scientific working framework of the Leopoldina. All academy members are organized into 28 subject sections according to their research area, which in turn are assigned to four classes. This class association, introduced in 2009, promotes interdisciplinary discussion and the participation of members in the Academy's work.
