Breuer-Stiftung honors five young DZNE researchers with "Best Paper Award"
For the fourth time, the Hans and Ilse Breuer Foundation has given special awards for outstanding publications to young researchers (doctoral or post-doctoral) in the research field of dementia.
The announcement and awarding of this year's prize winners took place at the end of October during the renowned Eibsee Meeting „Cellular Mechanisms of Neurodegeneration” 2024.
Five distinguished laureates
The prize for the best publication, endowed with 5,000 euros, was awarded to neuroscientist Stefanie Heumüller from DZNE Bonn for the article “Reactivated endogenous retroviruses promote protein aggregate spreading“ (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-023-40632-z), published in the journal "Nature Communications ", which she wrote as a member of Prof. Dr. Ina Vorberg’s research group.
Elena Doering from the DZNE Bonn (research group of Prof. Dr. Alexander Radbruch) and Marvin Reich from the DZNE Munich (research group of Prof. Dr. Christian Haass) share second place and each receive 4,000 euros. The third place is not awarded. Fourth-place recipient Iris Blotenberg from the DZNE Greifswald (research group of Prof. René Thyrian) receives 2,000 euros and fifth-place Hannah Baumeister from the DZNE Magdeburg (research group of Prof. Dr. David Berron) 1,000 euros for private use.
The award winners were selected by an international jury of experts, whose members are not members of the DZNE.
About the Hans und Ilse Breuer Foundation: The non-profit Hans and Ilse Breuer Foundation, based in Frankfurt am Main, is committed to helping those affected by dementia with its own dementia center, “StattHaus Offenbach”, while also promoting scientific fundamental research and health care research on dementia. Since 2006, the foundation has awarded the Alzheimer's Research Prize, which is endowed with 100,000 euros and has so far honored 24 prize winners. Also since 2006, the foundation has already awarded 36 scholarships to young scientists. In 2020, to mark the 20th anniversary of the foundation, the annual publication prizes were also announced for the first time.
