Topping-out ceremony for new home in Greifswald
Shared use with other research institutes
In the presence of Minister President Manuela Schwesig, the topping-out ceremony for the “William B. Kannel Center for Community Medicine”, which will house the Greifswald part of DZNE's Rostock/Greifwald site, was held on July 17, 2024. The research building is being jointly funded by the German federal government and the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is due to be completed by 2026. In addition to DZNE, the Institute for Community Medicine at Greifswald University Medicine and a branch of the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) will also be brought together here.
In the research building, scientists will therefore research the increasing incidence of diseases such as dementia and cardiovascular disorders in association with demographic change. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is considered a model region in this regard. “The new research building will provide the scientific basis for a patient-oriented and sustainable healthcare system of tomorrow,” says Prof. Wolfgang Hoffmann, Managing Director of the Institute for Community Medicine and Speaker for DZNE’s Rostock/Greifswald site.
The building is named after the renowned American health researcher William Kannel (1923 - 2011) and is being built on the central campus of Greifswald University Medicine.
