The Scientific Director and Chairman of the Board at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), Professor Pierluigi Nicotera MD PhD, is awarded this year’s „International Prize Gerolamo Cardano“. The Rotary Club of Pavia (Italy) hereby honors Nicotera’s scientific credits in the research of mechanisms determining neuronal death. „His publications have become quotation classics“, the jury said in its explanatory statement.
The award named after the great universal scholar of renaissance has been granted for important contributions to the progress of science and art since 1989. Previous prize winners are the designer Sergio Pininfarina as well as the renowned prion investigator Adriano Aguzzi. On June 1st, during the award ceremony at the University of Pavia, where Professor Nicotera started his career as a physician, he gives a speech on „Neurodegenerative Diseases in the new Millennium: An Epidemic to be prevented“.
