Background
In Germany, there are about 1.6 million people living with dementia and it is estimated that this number will rise above three million by 2050. Dementia makes memory and daily life difficult. Physical activity is crucial as it improves the quality of life of people with dementia and can prevent age-related diseases. In addition, it promotes socialization, creates a sense of community and support, which is fundamental for the emotional and physical well-being of these people.
Aim of the project
With this in mind, the DZNE aimed to identify the barriers and enabling factors that influenced the successful implementation of physical activity initiatives in people with dementia. To achieve this, it worked in cooperation with the DOSB and the DAlzG in their project 'Sport moves people with dementia', which was funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth of Germany and aimed to promote physical activity in this population group.
Project process
The DZNE conducted 13 interviews with 21 participants, including project leaders and sports coaches, to assess the effectiveness of the sports initiatives using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). This analysis made it possible to identify both challenges and opportunities in the implementation of physical activity programs for people with dementia. Barriers such as the need for stronger networks and sustainable funding were highlighted, as well as facilitators such as the motivation of leaders and support from external organizations. The qualitative assessment provided valuable information to optimize implementation and ensure the sustainability of these initiatives.
