Participant information
We would like to explain to you here why the DZNE conducts clinical studies and what important role you play in them. In addition, you will learn everything about your rights as a study participant. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us: info-line(at)dzne.de
Neurodegenerative diseases are chronic diseases of the brain in which there are progressive disturbances of certain brain functions. In Alzheimer's disease or frontotemporal dementias, for example, memory or language are affected. Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS ) or ataxias are mainly manifested by motor impairments. The situation is similar after strokes, in the case of chronic cerebral circulatory disorders and other diseases.
The objectives of clinical research
Clinical research at the DZNE pursues the long-term goal of developing new and effective therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. Within the framework of clinical studies, in close cooperation with the university hospitals at the DZNE sites, the basis for new methods of early diagnosis and therapy will be created by:
- Applying findings from basic research in clinical trials to improve treatment for people with neurodegenerative diseases.
- Improving pre- and early symptomatic diagnosis as a necessary prerequisite for successful development of novel therapies.
- The promotion of studies on innovative non-pharmacological interventions.
Who may participate in clinical studies of the DZNE?
In principle, people suffering from a neurodegenerative disease, such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease, can participate in clinical studies. Of course, the selection of possible subjects always depends on the questions to which answers are sought in the study. In addition, we are also looking for healthy study subjects and relatives of people with neurodegenerative diseases, for example, to find out how tolerable and effective treatment methods are. However, in every clinical study there are the so-called inclusion and exclusion criteria. This means that there are detailed specifications as to which subjects are allowed to participate in our studies and which are not. Before inclusion in a study, a study physician always conducts an in-depth interview, and potential subjects are always intensively examined in advance by a study physician.
What is my benefit?
By participating, you are supporting neurodegenerative disease research and helping our dedicated researchers achieve clinical research goals. You have no direct benefit as a participant.
Will there be any costs for me?
You will receive the study-specific examinations free of charge. Travel expenses will usually be reimbursed. Furthermore, you will receive an expense allowance for your participation in some studies.
Is my data secure?
All your data will of course be treated with absolute confidentiality. DZNE Clinical Research complies with all legal data protection requirements for clinical studies.
